Get dirty in ATV Offroad Fury 4

With ATVs, bikes, buggies and trucks, there's plenty of transport in ATV Offroad Fury 4.

With dust clouds pouring out behind you, you hit a ramp and take to the air, praying for firm ground on the other side. There's no shortage of adrenaline in the world of ATV racing.

ATV Offroad Fury 4's title doesn't completely do it justice, because for the first time in the series you can race motorbikes, trucks and dune buggies. Each vehicle demands a different racing approach - bikes lean into corners with ease, but are easy to lose control of when going over jumps, while dune buggies require skilful power sliding around muddy corners.

The game's greatest strength is its scope. To complement the range of vehicles, there's an impressive array of courses, each varied enough to accommodate different racing styles. Supercross and Rallycross courses are outdoor circuits designed for light (ATVs and bikes) and heavy (trucks and buggies) vehicles respectively. Circuits are indoor race tracks and Freestyle arenas feature massive ramps and gaps, allowing you to take flight with your ATV or bike and nail outrageous tricks.

Point to Point races are particularly impressive, allowing any combination of vehicle types to race across some of the world's most exotic locations. The maps are huge and varied, and there are multiple paths, so you'll need a few races on each to work out the fastest route. Helpfully, each path is colour coded - blue paths are wider and more suitable for trucks and buggies, while red paths are narrower and offer a shortcut for ATVs and bikes, but are riskier.

There are 72 tracks in all, and each one feels unique. If you want something truly original, there's an easy to use track editor in which you can build and race your own creations.

In Story mode, you take a male or female rookie from obscurity and turn them into the world's greatest offroad racer. Along the way, you win sponsorship deals that allow you to buy or upgrade vehicles; essential if you want to keep up with the pack later on. Vehicle tuning is comprehensive, offering a great deal of customisation, from upgrading the engine to changing the tyres and fitting new alloy wheels.

As if all this single player content weren't enough, ATV Offroad Fury 4 includes an array of multiplayer modes and features. Up to four players can race in split-screen mode, while as many as eight can tear up the dirt together online. There are online tournaments and support for voice chat through a USB headset. A Community section provides access to message boards, friend lists and leaderboards.

There are hours of good dirty fun to be had with ATV Offroad Fury 4. The different vehicles offer great variety and there are an incredible amount of tracks to race them on. It all adds up to an intense experience and one of the best arcade racers on PlayStation 2.
