An unknown enemy

Story

An unknown enemy

"Two possibilities exist: Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying." That chilling quote from Arthur C. Clarke kicks off a tale of alien invasion and human survival in the face of adversity.

The entire world is under attack. Whole cities are wiped out as strange pods crash to earth and green tentacles emerge to grab those around them, turning them into husks.

In a direct response to the alien invasion, and with each country's military forces in disarray, the Council of Nations creates the Extra-terrestrial Combat Unit. With the aid of Central Officer Bradford and with you at the helm to dictate strategy and control each battleground, we humans might just have a chance of survival.

Casualties are inevitable; total annihilation is preventable.

The end of the world as we know it

Presentation

The end of the world as we know it

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is packed with charm. Each mission you take begins with the drop ship landing, putting you in the troop carrier with your team. It's within these moments that the weight of responsibility sinks in - these aren't faceless sprites you're controlling, but a group of men and women that you're invested in, and that can be taken away from you by the enemy in the blink of an eye.

Back at base things are equally as tense. The blaring alarm calls you to action periodically, either with the discovery of an ongoing abduction or to undertake a special mission at the bidding of the Council of Nations.

The aliens you encounter are extremely varied and frequently grotesque; the familiar little men with big heads are immediately followed up by the disconcertingly humanlike Thin Men, and it's not long before the aliens crack out the big guns: huge brutes with an intimidating war cry that can cause even hardened soldiers to panic.

Band of brothers (and sisters)

Characters

Band of brothers (and sisters)

Assemble the world's best minds to fight against the powerful extraterrestrial force bearing down on mankind across the globe. Aiding your epic battle, researchers Dr Vahlen and the enigmatic Dr Shen will use the fragments of technology you pick up on missions to advance human knowledge and take the fight to the aliens.

Expand your underground base to build new weapons, tool up your team and take these military specialists on assignments to protect humanity and obliterate the invaders.

Each new soldier in your team starts as a lowly recruit, and they quickly become battle hardened and pick up new skills along the way.

The true magic of XCOM: Enemy Unknown is in the way it allows you to make stories for yourself. Grab the ELITE SOLDIER PACK to add customisation options for your fighters, then pick a name for each of your brave men and women; choose those of your friends and family members... even celebrities - it won't be long before you become totally invested in your crew, and every decision you make in the field can lead to a key team member not making it home.

Strategic thinking

Gameplay

Strategic thinking

On the battlefield you have a top-down view to survey the area, although you can only see as far as your team whilst far-off regions will be clouded with the fog of war. You can push forward slowly, allowing an additional action should you come into contact with the enemy. Alternatively, dash forward to reach cover and protect yourself against any aliens that might get a shot off as you approach.

Advancing one of your squad too far will leave them open to attack. This situation is made all the more perilous when you consider the power of enemy weapons against your own. You're outmanned and outgunned. True strategic thinking and teamwork is the key to your success.

Away from the main story, there are a whole host of things to do. This preparation could be a game in itself - researching new advanced equipment, extending your base with new laboratories and power generators, distributing resources and protecting each nation of the world by launching satellites and preparing fighter jets to defend them.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown has deep, strategic gameplay where every action you take has a consequence. Pick it up now from our online store.
