We round up the finest ground shakers and mould breakers from the first five years of PlayStation 3.

Uncharted

Combining knockabout charm with a spectacular sense of adventure, Nathan Drake is the undoubted star of the Uncharted series on PlayStation 3. The fabled Amazonian city of El Dorado is the subject of his first outing in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, though Drake finds something far darker than the lost City of Gold.

Next, Drake heads for the Himalayas on the hunt for the ancient Cintamani Stone in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, before stepping down from the Roof of the World to the Atlantis of the Sands, deep in the Middle Eastern desert, in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.

Play all three games to get a scintillating sense of adventure that's only possible on PS3.

LittleBigPlanet

They say that giving is better than receiving, and LittleBigPlanet on PS3 takes that one step further by giving you the tools to create and share nuggets of gaming joy, with loveable mascot Sackboy lighting up your creations.

LittleBigPlanet 2 expands the possibilities further, letting you build not just levels, but entire games for the thriving LittleBigPlanet online community. Empower your imagination with LittleBigPlanet now, only on PS3.

Resistance

Mankind's future has never been threatened as it is in Resistance: Fall of Man on PS3. Its alien invasion introduces us to the terrifying Chimera, descending on an alternate 1950s Britain intent on wreaking havoc.

You play as Nathan Hale, a US soldier assigned to the British resistance, who then returns home in Resistance 2 to continue the struggle across the Atlantic. Stepping into the shoes of Joseph Capelli in Resistance 3, you'll journey through a haunting vision of America, encountering the last remnants of humanity along the way.

Join the fight on PS3 before it's too late.

Heavy Rain

End the Origami Killer's spree in Heavy Rain on PS3, as you experience the action from four different points of view. Incredible visuals put you at the centre of this BAFTA award-winning thriller, while moody ambience and a dark narrative web combine to set Heavy Rain apart from anything else.

A grief-stricken architect, an insomniac photojournalist, an FBI profiler and a private investigator form the four pillars of the emotionally driven plot. The course it follows depends on the decisions you make in the heat of the moment...

Killzone

War against the Helghast began in Killzone for PlayStation 2, and it is given frightening intensity in Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 on PS3. As Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko, you are leading the fightback deep into planet Helghan, and where the drama ends in Killzone 2, it begins once more in Killzone 3.

Fight your way out of a disastrous situation in a bid to escape the hostile planet. Blistering action in a storm of bullets is the series' trademark - sign up for the all out assault on PS3 if you think you have the nerve.

inFAMOUS

Cole MacGrath is a very different kind of hero. The star of inFAMOUS on PS3 is someone who grew up not knowing his purpose, so when a bomb blast gifts him strange new powers, he faces a dilemma: use them for good or evil in a vulnerable world?

It's not a question that proves any easier to answer in inFAMOUS 2. Relocated to New Marais in the Deep South, MacGrath must come to terms with the events that caused him to flee Empire City while facing up to the new threat heading his way.

Be worshipped or feared, and above all, be prepared to live with the consequences.

Journey

A world without borders in a game that defies genres. In Journey, you'll explore a mysterious land either alone or in the company of nameless strangers. However you decide to play, it's another spellbinding title from thatgamecompany, the studio behind Flower and flOw.

When it comes to Journey, travelling is even more important than arriving on PS3.

PixelJunk

Imagination and invention are the cornerstones of the incredible PixelJunk series, available to download to your PS3 from PlayStation Store. Will you choose PixelJunk Eden, the enchanting adventure set in a magical garden?

Or will you sample the watery delights of PixelJunk Shooter in a bid to save trapped scientists? Maybe you'll command an army of critters in PixelJunk Monsters? Try one or try them all, and discover why quirkiness equals happiness on PS3.

EyePet

He's the loveable pet born in your living room and nurtured on PS3. EyePet is the mischievous critter who responds to you – design new toys for him using your PlayStation Move motion controller, collect outfits for him and use the PlayStation Eye camera to capture his funniest moments.

The fun - and trouble - is doubled in EyePet & Friends, as you play with two furry scamps. Train them to play games and you'll earn credits which can be spent on brand new outfits and pet accessories.

MotorStorm

If you've ever wondered what it is that makes breakneck racing so exciting, then MotorStorm on PS3 has the answer. It's mud. The first game introduced the idea of a track degrading as you race around it, making each lap trickier than the last. In the second game of the series, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Monument Valley is left behind and you'll speed through humid swampland, brooding volcanoes and thick jungle.

Most recently, MotorStorm Apocalypse pits you against Mother Nature as well as fearsome rivals, as a series of destructive events threaten to send you careering off the track.

With grand fantasy to be found in the White Knight Chronicles series, a world populated by superheroes in DC Universe Online and the first game created with the help of the PlayStation community, Gamocracy One: Legend of Robot, and much, much more besides, PlayStation 3 is a hotbed of quality and creation - just play any of our picks to remind yourself exactly why.
