A long time ago, on a PlayStation far, far away...
2007 marks the 30th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope, George Lucas' original space opera that changed the face of popular culture for ever. Plenty of celebrations are going on to commemorate the anniversary, including Star Wars: The Exhibition, a huge collection of Star Wars costumes, props and memorabilia touring Europe. For a franchise as big and successful as Star Wars, videogame adaptations were sure to follow, and sure enough, for as long as there have been Star Wars movies to watch, there have been Star Wars games to play. Here's a run down of some of the best, available to buy on PlayStation 2 and PSP.
Star Wars: Lethal Alliance (PSP)
Focusing on a brand new pair of protagonists: Rianna Saren, a Twi'lek mercenary and her security droid Zeeo, Star Wars: Lethal Alliance spans the gap between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and Episode IV: A New Hope. Featuring a rewarding blend of action and platforming, and a gripping plot to steal plans for the Death Star, Star Wars: Lethal Alliance lets you take a brand new Star Wars adventure with you wherever you go.
Lego Star Wars (PS2, PSP)
A match made in childhood heaven, Lego Star Wars brings together two of the most popular things ever to entertain kids: Lego and Star Wars! Featuring adorable Lego recreations of some of the most famous and iconic moments from the films, and being a fantastically enjoyable game to boot, Lego Star Wars is great fun for the whole family.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (PS2, PSP)
Based on the final chapter of the Star Wars saga, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith gives you the chance to live out all your Jedi fantasies as you control Anakin and Obi Wan as they battle the droid armies of Count Dooku. Playing as a cross between a weapon-based beat 'em up and a compelling third person action adventure, Revenge of the Sith has all the lightsaber combat and force powers you could ever ask for. Impressive...
Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter (PS2)
Featuring all the blistering space combat of the previous Star Wars Starfighter game, with the added bonus of Jedi Force powers, Jedi Starfighter blasts you into space to take on the best that the Trade federation can throw at you. Using Force powers to protect your ship, as well as to blast enemies with lightning and slow down time is great fun and extremely cool - everything a Star Wars game should be.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 (PS2, PSP)
Expanding upon the original game, Star Wars Battlefront 2 gives players the chance to explore the Star Wars universe in exhaustive detail, fighting battles on planets, in deep space and aboard space stations. Combining a great mix of land-based and aerial combat with a compelling story set during the transition from Old Republic Clone Troopers to Imperial Stormtroopers, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is fantastic fun for everyone, from the most die hard Star Wars fan to the casual gamer looking for a Star Wars flavoured slice of shooting action.
So there you have it. Whether you favour a lightsaber, or believe that hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, you're sure to find something in the list above to keep you playing for another 30 years...
