This year's event follows the same format as the 2011 edition with six online qualification seasons and 11 Live Qualifier Events determining the best 23 players in the world. This elite squad of gaming talent will compete in the Grand Final in May 2012 alongside the reigning number one, Portugal's <a href="/psn/news/articles/detail/item382234/Cruz-grabs-FIFA-Interactive-World-Cup-crown/" target="_self">Francisco Cruz</a>, for the title of FIFA Interactive World Cup Champion. All you need to get started is a copy of <a href="/ps3/games/detail/item376579/EA-SPORTS%E2%84%A2-FIFA-12/" target="_self">EA SPORTS FIFA 12</a> on PlayStation 3 and a <a href="/psn" target="_self">PlayStation Network</a> account. If you signed up in-game before 31 December 2011 you're in with a chance of winning a dream trip for you and a friend to FIFA's annual gala awards event, the FIFA Ballon d'Or, in January 2012. You may be tempted to dispatch the tough Brotherhood with more powerful attacks like Gun Channeling, Executions, or a well-placed Black Hole, but always be mindful of the fact that you may be robbing yourself of valuable Essence. Time to die Executing enemies equals large amounts of Essence points, which can be used to purchase upgrades. Performing these takedowns doesn't leave any hearts behind, so you won't be able to heal Jackie. The best way around this is by purchasing the Health Execution upgrade, which allows you to gain a little health with every execution. Double trouble You can swap which hand holds a dual wielded gun by pressing the down button on your wireless controller when you have two weapons in your grasp. I personally find this very useful because I'm used to holding the L1 button down to aim, and sometimes forget to keep pressing it when using a semi-automatic pistol in Jackie's left hand. By placing a fully automatic sub-machine gun, such as the Uzi, in Jackie's left hand I can use it effectively even if I just press and hold the L1 button. Hold your fire Ammo in <a href="/ps3/games/detail/item405722/The-Darkness-II/" target="_self">The Darkness II</a> is a precious resource and can be hard to come by at certain points in the game. Avoid wasting it by using Jackie's Demon Arms and other Darkness powers. Be sure to get in close to slash an enemy with one Demon Arm, or keep your distance and grab objects in the environment to hurl at them instead of wasting bullets. It's really important to remember that guns are only one of the many deadly weapons at your disposal. Master grabber You can make weak mobsters vulnerable to being grabbed by first staggering them with an attempted grab. Once they're dazed, they're very easy to get hold of and take down. You can easily see when an enemy is vulnerable to that specific attack - their heart and vasculature will pulse with an unnatural glow. You can also make an enemy vulnerable to a grab by staggering them with bullets, or hitting them with a quick Demon Arm slash attack. Tougher enemies like the Brotherhood are not so easy to deal with - trying to get a hold of a member of the Brotherhood when he's not vulnerable only makes him angry. Secrets of the Brotherhood Brotherhood members wearing heavy armour cannot be grabbed using Jackie's Demon Arms until their armour is destroyed. It's the same for Brotherhood enemies wielding shields - you can use the Demon Arms to snatch their shield, but only after the armour covering it has been destroyed. Grabbing the shield isn't the only way to dispatch this devious enemy's principle defence. You can use the Swarm attack to force him to drop it, or you can use Gun Channeling and the Heart of Darkness upgrade to shoot right through it. Once you have worn the shield down, you slash it with the Demon Arms to stagger him and then let rip with your firearms. Pole dancer True Masters of The Darkness II never pick up poles when they are lying on the ground. Use an upward slash with one Demon Arm to knock the pole into the air, and then snatch it mid-air with the other. Your enemies will tremble before your pole-juggling awesomeness. Devilish demo tips Picking up Relics earns 300 Essence points, and there are 2 that can be found in the Demo available to download for free from PlayStation Store. Here's a tip that allows you to access more Talents within the Talent Shrine. The first Relic is right outside the door after the Darkling gives you an Uzi. The second is in the Subway. I won't say where exactly, but it's before you get to the Talent Shrine on the Subway's lower level. If you avoid spending Essence at that first Talent Shrine, find both Relics, eat lots of hearts, and avoid gun kills, you'll be able to purchase the Gun Channeling or Swarm powers from the second Talent Shrine for maximum carnage. Find out how to become the best Batman or Joker pretender on the block thanks to the game's art director, David Longo. "You... you complete me..." Completing the Challenge mode is the best way to become familiar with the game. It gives you the great advantage of getting to grips with the different gadgets, especially the more unique ones such as the glider, grappling gun and spring boots. The Challenges teach you how to use the gadgets effectively, with a scoring system to rate your performance, so make sure you play them before going online. Vulture or bat, what's the difference? Don't be afraid to set up high vantage points, pick off your enemies with ranged weapons such as the Shredder, PVC rocket launcher and sniper rifle, and then swoop in like a vulture to snatch leftover goodies. "Clothing is custom, no labels. Nothing in his pockets but knives and lint." Gotham City Impostors is designed for lots of customisation, not only for making your own Joker or Batman, but also in the way you play. For example, if you like to be speedy, choose a light body type. If you like to heal teammates, pick the Motivator megaphone which lets you shout encouraging words at your partners to increase their armour. There's no one way to play, so experiment to figure out what equipment and body types fit your style best. Holy bear trap, Batman! One of my favourite tactics is leaving traps for enemies speeding around corners. In modes like Fumigation and Psych Warfare there are specific points on the map where players have to go to, so items like the bear trap and Trap-in-the-Box are ideal to use as you don't have to be anywhere near your foe to kill them. The glider is also very useful as you can get around the maps quickly, have a high vantage point to see where people are fighting and also for using the dive-bomb attack. "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" If someone is really good with the glider, roller skates or grappling gun, then make use of the garden gnome which has a taser that stuns anyone who glides or grapples over it, leaving them vulnerable to attacks. The bear trap and Trap-in-the-Box - which is a proximity mine in the shape of a jack-in-the-box - are also very handy. The joker isn't the only card in your deck Fun Facts are your ability perks in Gotham City Impostors, so pick cards that balance out your character. If you like a light body type and want to be a bit more resilient, choose the Horse Healthy Fun Fact to add more health to your character. Or you can select Leathery Skin which makes you more immune to melee damage like knife attacks. "Riddle me this, Batman..." You can unlock something cool and cosmetic when you get to a certain point in Gotham City Impostors, yet it's not part of your costume, not a weapon and it's not attached to you. It doesn't come to you quickly or easily, but it won't take a long time to get, either. What is it? You'll have to play to find out... Otherwise you are a sitting duck. You have been warned. Radio days In Starhawk it's absolutely imperative that you use your Wireless Stereo Headset as a means of communication with your teammates. Trust us, you'll last a whole lot longer. Be sure to encourage your friends to use their headsets too so you can all work together for the best kind of Starhawk experience. Enemy mine The mines in Starhawk are magnetic, which means you can attach them to your Hawk or Razorback vehicles. Once they are attached, and if you can get close enough to an enemy Hawk or Razorback, the mine will automatically stick to your opponent. Wall spam, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing If you place a lot of walls on a map using the Build and Battle system, they have a tendency to suck up a lot of space. Be sure to place walls on a map intelligently by looking for potential bottlenecks. It's very tempting to build walls as they are relatively cheap to construct in the game, but stand firm and avoid spamming the battlefield with unwanted clutter. Tear it down You can sell and remove most buildings on the map by using the yellow control panel found on each structure. Simply approach the panel, choose Remove from the options menu and down it comes. Bite the hand that feeds If you ever come across a player on the Starhawk battlefield with a handle that begins with LBI or SONY, it's us. So go ahead and try and take us out. We want you to. Not a sketch pad, as you might expect of an in-demand artist, but something to scribble snatched thoughts in. The designer has just completed his first theme, Partytime, for <a href="/psn/services/detail/item364526/The-Studio/" target="_self">The Studio</a> on PlayStation Store, and as he explains to PlayStation.com, writing things down is the only way to get any kind of grip on the ideas that clatter around his head. "People often ask me where I get my surreal concepts from, and to be honest I struggle to come up with visual ideas," Mark says, although it's hard to take him at his word. His work ranged from eye-popping ads for Atlantic Records to densely detailed posters for the charity Shelter before joining up with The Studio. "The technical stuff, drawing, I can do. When I went to art college I suddenly realised that the easy thing would have been trying to be individual by doing graffiti, but I knew that was a dead-end route." Advertising, with its mix of snappy slogans and arresting imagery, appealed instead. "I thought it wasn't right for me at first because you'd come in to college each day with 30 ideas you'd be really proud of, but our tutors would bin 29 of them. They'd give the last one back and go, 'It needs work.'" It helped Mark refine the way he thinks about things. Hence the notebook. "I write things down, whether they're interesting phrases or just thoughts of my own, then turn those ideas into the sort of thing you see on The Studio." Download Mark's Partytime theme to your PlayStation 3 or PSP from PlayStation Store and you'll discover a slightly warped imagination at work beneath a playful exterior of floating balloons, which draws upon his time in advertising as well as his fascination with all things American – or to be exact, Americana. "I guess that's kind of a backlash," Mark explains. "A lot of my friends were really into hip hop, so I decided to look elsewhere for my inspiration. I sometimes get called a graffiti artist but there's none of that in my work at all. I draw the stuff I like myself before I get involved with spray cans and paint drips." Bright, flashy commercials and cartoons made their mark on the artist growing up. "I wanted to be an animator. Disney movies, Looney Tunes, all those kids' cartoons had a big impact. It was all American, and to a little kid it seemed amazing. It built America into this amazing place full of the stuff I was into. That myth was created. And then when you finally get to go there, you find it's not a million miles away from the UK. It rains and everything." You can see pipe dream meeting damp reality in much of Mark's work, including his Partytime theme. His inflatable light bulbs, pineapples and skulls drift up the screen to their doom, bursting in a cloud of colour. It's the latest pothole in a long and bumpy road of realisation. "I went to New York while I was at college and stayed in a ten-dollar-a-night hostel," he remembers. "That was grim, and the cracks in this dreamworld started to appear. So I decided to delve into all that culture and try to recreate a bit of the hope and glamour I felt as a kid. I try to take those pop icons of America – doughnuts and hot dogs and whatnot – and ground them in my south London roots." Painting freehand, Mark uses a number of techniques to give his work a distinct flavour. As well as drawing and redrawing elements 20 times or more to ensure the balance between reality and cartoon is just right, he also has a number of other stylistic tricks up his sleeve. "I found that perforated paper let me do halftone fades really quickly, with a nice aesthetic. If you were to use this technique with a computer, the dots would reduce in size to give a sense of shading. I found that with a paper template, the dots actually got fainter, not smaller. This gives it the same visual effect, but a grainier, dirtier look which fits in nicely with that notion of faded Americana. It gives it a comic book feel." For his PlayStation theme, Mark decided to dip into animation. "It's what bit me as a kid so I've been really enjoying doing this. I had the idea of a bunch of depressed balloons because my work is going down the distorted circus route at the moment, a bit like the famously dilapidated fairground at Coney Island in New York. "When you think of carnival balloons you think of really bright colours. So I muted my usual tones to find something a little more British and suburban, in my eyes. More grey. So they float up the screen, these monochrome balloons, and then burst with a flourish, like fireworks. "What I try to do with my work is celebrate that Americana world, and add my sense of humour to it." After all this talk of ideas, here's another one for you.
