Discover how the imaginative world of this charming <a href="/psvita" target="_self">PlayStation Vita</a> game was created...</p> <p><b>World building</b></p> <p></p> <p>When we started planning Gravity Rush, we were worried about how to create a world that would complement our ideas of controlling gravity. We felt something would be missing if players were able to just fly around in a realistic city. However, once the idea of a vertical world - as opposed to a more flat, horizontal one - was suggested, it came together all at once. This multilayered world was built up like a maze and littered with hidden areas, making exploration enjoyable for the player.</p> <p><b>Moebius and The Fifth Element</b></p> <p>Design-wise we were influenced by both Jean Giraud, aka Moebius, and the movie The Fifth Element. Layered cities can be seen in some of Giraud's work and we wanted to build upon that concept in a movie style, similar to The Fifth Element. Putting these two ideas together wasn't difficult.</p> <p>When we designed the city it started with us placing a giant pillar in its centre. Once that was done, we were able to imagine the rest of it and its surroundings. Also, setting the world in a fixed time allowed us to create really interesting things, like the district of Pleajeune that exists within the shadow of the pillar.</p> <p><b>Culture clash</b></p> <p></p> <p>The background of Gravity Rush's city was influenced by our impressions of Copenhagen, Denmark, and the buildings were partially based on ones found in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. So in Gravity Rush there are things like modern billboards on top of old buildings, providing a mixture of various cultures over different generations - offering what we feel is a unique European backdrop. It's a unique city, born out of a variety of images. </p> <p><b>A city on the edge</b></p> <p>We often get asked whether the city in Gravity Rush is futuristic, or what planet it's set on. Gravity Rush is a strange, fictitious world, far outside of reality, so much more abstract than usual. We also simplified a lot of elements found in real life such as politics, poverty and pollution.</p> <p></p> <p>This is not to say that the Gravity Rush world is without problems. It's a world being eaten away from below, posing a serious problem for the inhabitants of the city at its edge. The people who live above them don't see this as an immediate threat, so they have not done anything to help. Beat the rush and start here...</p> <p><b>Coming up with Kat</b><br />In Gravity Rush we challenged ourselves to create a strong yet introverted personality that is different from other video game characters. We wanted someone players could almost see as a friend, and whom they would want to support and cheer for.</p> <p></p> <p>From a story point of view, we wanted to focus on a lead character who was initially lonely, yet soon gained skills, made friends and won people's confidence. We also wanted to create a character that players could get attached to, so we eventually decided that a young, clumsy yet endearing female would match our concept well and fit with the design of the game.</p> <p><b>The gravity of designing a heroine</b><br />One of the most important things we wanted was to give our female lead universal traits that would be easy to relate to - a design that would be timeless and not just fit present-day trends.</p> <p></p> <p>We were careful not to give her overly anime style expressions or obviously heroic features, which you sometimes find in some American comic books. We concentrated on removing any specific resemblance she might have with other people, cultures or eras to go with her unusual world perspective. And finally, we made an effort to design her in such a way that she would fit into the many situations - from light-hearted to the serious - that Gravity Rush has to offer.</p> <p><b>"A gleam of supernatural power..."</b><br />When creating Kat from a playable point of view, we thought that a strong, exotic character type would be well suited to the game. We fashioned her in a ninja-like image, gave her a small frame and made her agile with various skills. We polished off her design by adding a visual touch of style typically seen in American comic book heroes - a gleam of supernatural power in her eye.</p> <p></p> <p><b>A retro gravity groove </b><br />Some of the elements we put into Gravity Rush, such as Kat having a cool rival, or having to complete undercover infiltration missions, were inspired by television series such as The Bionic Woman and anime from the 70s. We had a lot of fun and went to great lengths to create a game that was unlike others, easy to related to, childlike and yet mature all at the same time. Celebrating the real-life tournament which kicks off on 8 June 2012, the pack contains all of the teams and stadiums from the upcoming festival of football.</p> <p>Here, <a href="http://www.ea.com/au/sports" target="_blank">EA SPORTS</a> producer Sebastian Enrique talks us through the new features, and reveals how the multinational team at the developer's home in Vancouver will be following the action from Poland and Ukraine.</p> <p><b>What's new for EA SPORTS FIFA 12 fans?</b></p> <p></p> <p>With EA SPORTS FIFA 12 we had a game that people really embraced, so rather than starting over we've decided to add to it via PlayStation Store. There's already a universe of people playing EA SPORTS FIFA 12, so it made perfect sense to add another layer to what is still popular and available.</p> <p>Authentic national team kits and stadiums are included, and there are new features as well. Challenges mode lets you earn experience points to boost your EA SPORTS Football Club profile. Twice a week throughout the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament we'll be injecting real-life scenarios into the game as they occur. So, say France are playing Sweden and they go a man down, you'll then have the chance to win the match with only ten men in replayable challenges.</p> <p><b>What can you tell us about Expedition mode?</b></p> <p>It's a little like the Career mode in EA SPORTS FIFA 12. You start with your own team captain – someone like Steven Gerrard or Iker Casillas, perhaps – and then you build a team around him using randomly selected players. You'll customise kits and colours and so on, come up with a name to use, and then try to improve your team by winning matches.</p> <p>You'll have players from all over Europe to begin with, of a fairly low level. You'll take them on an expedition through Europe, playing all comers and eventually unlocking more countries to pick players from. You'll play each country three times to unlock that region, and we think it's a nice way to keep the feeling of European competition while giving it a new slant.</p> <p><b>How have you captured the atmosphere of UEFA EURO 2012?</b></p> <p></p> <p>We've captured the broadcast look and feel – that big match presentation. There's a new camera which provides a broadcast angle that's much closer to the action on the pitch. Plus you'll see a special flourish before each knockout game to add to the spectacle.</p> <p>We love working on the games that celebrate big football tournaments. We can really focus on the coming together of nations and their star players. With the colour, noise and broadcast touches I really think this replicates what you'll be watching on TV. </p> <p><b>Are the team at the Vancouver campus going to be closely following the tournament?</b></p> <p>Absolutely. The studio will be completely taken over. It's an international group which means everyone will have a team to follow. A lot of the matches are scheduled to take place at what will be lunchtime in Vancouver, so productivity may be a little slow then...</p> <p>There'll be special events, we'll be staging our own tournaments, people will wear their favourite kits into work and those national rivalries will start to emerge. What has been your favourite use of these features so far? (DeuceDeckard)</b></p> <p>I like the many games that place context-sensitive buttons on the touchscreen within easy reach of my thumbs. As far as the rear touch pad goes, shot targeting in <a href="/psn/games/detail/item433456/EA-SPORTS-FIFA-Football/" target="_self">EA SPORTS FIFA Football</a> is brilliant, and the stretching and squashing mechanism in <a href="/psn/games/detail/item425707/TOUCH-MY-KATAMARI™/" target="_self">TOUCH MY KATAMARI</a> is very fun to use. </p> <p>Regarding the use of motion sensors, the physics manipulation in Gravity Rush and sniper aim control in <a href="/psn/games/detail/item376898/Uncharted-Golden-Abyss%E2%84%A2/" target="_self">Uncharted: Golden Abyss</a> are amazing features. And when it comes to the front and rear cameras, I really enjoy the puzzles in Uncharted: Golden Abyss which Nathan Drake solves by taking photos and the augmented reality games available to download free from PlayStation Store.</p> <p>I also get a kick from sending a photo of my face to my rivals when I win an online race in <a href="/psn/games/detail/item376479/WipEout%C2%AE-2048/" target="_self">WipEout 2048</a>.  </p> <p><b>How do you see factors like GPS affecting the way we play PS Vita games online? (Laserbrain) </b></p> <p>With many games using the functions provided by the revolutionary service "<a href="/psn/news/articles/detail/item398034/PS-Vita-introduces-a-social-gaming-revolution/" target="_self">near</a>", GPS - as part of the location data acquisition service on PS Vita - will add another layer to games. People can express where they are and what games they are playing at the touch of a button.</p> <p><b>What was the thinking behind "near"? It's a great service for social gaming. (Quaser34)<br /></b></p> <p></p> <p>We wanted to help people to find each other, and find new games, applications and special in-game items based on where they are. The service also provides an easy mechanism for all PS Vita titles to use location data as an innovative social feature. For instance, the Black Market mode in Uncharted: Golden Abyss lets you trade rare treasures with other nearby PS Vita users.</p> <p>I hope it encourages people to carry their PS Vita systems with them to see what's hot in different places.</p> <p><b>Like many gamers, I would like to know how and why you came up with the idea for the rear touch pad? (Killerbeeny)</b></p> <p>It was originally proposed by the hardware group of SCEI. After our teams experimented with it, we found lots of interesting uses for it so we decided it was natural to use it for PS Vita. I'm thrilled to see it turn out to be one of the standout features of the system - and I feel we are just scratching the surface of the potential of the rear touch pad.</p> <p><b>What are your thoughts on what the future of touchscreen technology might bring for PS Vita? (Markazzz)</b></p> <p>PS Vita developers around the world will come up with unique, direct and tactile ideas that make great use of both the touchscreen and the rear touch pad. A great sneak preview of where we might be headed is in one of the mini-games in <a href="/psn/games/detail/item376879/Little-Deviants%E2%84%A2/" target="_self">Little Deviants</a>, in which you pinch a Deviant from both sides of the screen and shoot it like a slingshot.  </p> <p><b><a href="/psn/services/detail/item461148/Augmented-reality-gaming/" target="_self">Augmented reality</a> offers many creative possibilities – how do you see this being integrated into future games? (Squanto666)</b></p> <p></p> <p>I think many games will use AR to let players see game characters superimposed onto a real-life setting. You can already customise game scenes in <a href="/psn/games/detail/item376904/Reality-Fighters%E2%84%A2/" target="_self">Reality Fighters</a>, while you're able to snap your own backgrounds in <a href="/psn/games/detail/item376203/Everybodys-Golf%C2%AE/" target="_self">Everybody's Golf</a>. Combinations of AR, location data and network services will be explored for some really futuristic ideas.  </p> <p><b>Technology is advancing so fast, where do you see PlayStation in ten years' time? Or topple an empire? Imagine if everything you'd worked so hard to build was demolished by a single enemy strike. And, what if, instead of a battlefield or war-torn city, you were fighting across the vast terrain of an entire universe?</p> <p>In a darkened room in Reykjavik's futuristic Harpa building in Iceland, players got their first taste of <a href="/psn/games/detail/item379478/DUST-514®/" target="_self">DUST 514</a> at developer CCP's annual gaming event, Fanfest. This was the perfect time to showcase its upcoming PlayStation 3 title which interlinks with the PC-based massively multiplayer online game, EVE Online.</p> <p></p> <p><b>Each bullet makes a difference</b></p> <p>"DUST 514 is a triple A, free to play MMO set within the EVE universe, connected to EVE Online on PC," explains Brandon Laurino, executive producer of DUST 514. "Being connected to EVE Online on PC means that there is a persistent universe filled with hundreds of thousands of people at one time, all making the game richer. It's a really unique experience, unlike any other video game out there."</p> <p>Within DUST 514, players are mercenaries with the ability to seize territory for their own corporations through fierce online battles. Playing in teams of up to 24 players via PSN, teamwork is essential to overthrow opponents and occupy land. With plenty of customisation options available for weapons and vehicles you're best equipped for the battle ahead.</p> <p>Players at Fanfest in Reykjavik were invited to take part in a tournament in teams of eight to whet their appetite for the online action coming to PS3 in 2012.</p> <p>"The reaction has been incredible; it's exceeded even our wildest expectations. The enthusiasm and passion for the game we saw when people were competing in the tournament is just unbelievable," says Laurino.</p> <p></p> <p><b>Experience DUST 514 on the move</b></p> <p>CCP has also announced an app for PlayStation Vita, provisionally called DUST 514: Noecom. The app will allow players to manage their DUST 514 experience from their PS Vita by checking mail, changing settings and viewing maps so that when they sit down to play, they'll be ready for battle.</p> <p>"We're calling it a companion app and it's really about taking DUST 514 with you on the go. You can go as deep into the rabbit hole as you'd like - we know when you're sitting on your sofa you just want to jump into the action, so PS Vita lets you sort out things like mail, your settings, the market and everything that supports the shooter experience in DUST 514. So, when you finally sit down and get into the game on your PS3, you'll have sorted it all out first on your PS Vita," says Laurino.</p> <p></p> <p><b>The dust won't settle</b></p> <p>Initially, temperate planets will host most of the action in DUST 514, and an update in early 2013 could see surfaces formed of ice, gas and lava being thrown into the mix, offering a whole new experience for players to experiment with.</p> <p>Fans can also look forward to a capture the flag mode being introduced, along with gladiator-style battles that other players can spectate and place bets upon.</p> <p>DUST 514 will release on PlayStation Store exclusively for PS3 later in 2012, so keep checking au.playstation.com and <a href="http://blog.au.playstation.com" target="_blank">PlayStation.Blog</a> for the latest news.</p> <p>PlayStation Australia has arrived on Facebook.
